Lymphedema Treatment
Program
The
lymphatic
system is part of the circulatory system of veins and arteries. This system
plays a very important role in removing impurities from the blood and in fighting
infection. In the normal lymphatic system there is a balance between fluid
and the body's ability to remove it. When interruption of the lymphatic system
occurs, such as with surgery, radiation therapy, trauma, infection, tumor
pressure or scar tissue formation, a build-up of fluid may occur. Lymphedema
is this fluid build up and results in swelling. A chronic inflammatory condition
stemming from the accumulations of fluid eventually results in fibrosis (hardening)
of the tissues in the arm or leg.
Our
staff of skilled professionals have specialized, advanced training in lymphedema
management techniques. You are assured of the most up-to-date information
and technology by caring, understanding staff. Our lymphedema program is affiliated
with the Mercy Cancer Center which offers you access to our case managers,
chaplain, financial counselor, registered dietitian, registered nurses, and
the Soloman Cancer Resource Library. A physician referral is needed. Please
