ASK THE DOCTOR

Dr. Melody St. John, board certified in internal medicine and specializing in rheumatology

What is bone densitometry?
A bone densitometry test helps detect osteoporosis, or low bone density, in its earliest stages and determine your risk for future bone fracture.

Why is a bone densitometry test important?
When osteoporosis is caught early, treatment can begin to prevent further bone loss, which may lead to hip, wrist and spinal fractures.

How is the test performed?
The exam is a medical scan much like an X-Ray. It is painless and only takes a few minutes to complete.

Who should consider a bone densitometry exam?
Men and women over the age of 50 can benefit from this test to detect low mineral content. Talk to your physician to see if this test is right for you.
