St. Joseph’s Mercy offers multiple National Heart Month activities to area residents

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – In recognition of National Heart Month, St. Joseph’s Mercy Health System is not only serving as Presenting Sponsor for the February 13 Hot Springs Heart Ball Gala in the Convention Center’s Horner Hall, it is hosting a pair of free heart disease seminars and conducting three different screenings.

As part of its Your Health Matters™ educational seminar series, St. Joseph’s Mercy will host How Can You Prevent Heart Disease? at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 18 in the Magnolia Room at Garvan Woodland Gardens. Dr. Joe Howe, a St. Joseph’s Mercy Clinic cardiovascular surgeon, will conduct the approximate one-hour event that will cover the significance of quality cardiovascular health and provide evidence-based information on the key factors that contribute to heart disease, stroke or heart attack.

Meanwhile, a His and Hers Heart Disease Prevention educational seminar will be conducted in Hot Springs Village at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 19 in the Christ of the Hills United Methodist Church (700 Balearic Road) by internal medicine physician Yang Xu, M.D. (officially starts at Hot Springs Village’s 903 DeSoto Boulevard St. Joseph’s Mercy Clinic in July 2010) and family practice physician Halah Al-Dadah, M.D. Both educational seminars will conclude with question-and-answer sessions.

St. Joseph’s Mercy Heart & Vascular Center will host heart risk screening sessions on Wednesday, February 17 and Friday, February 19. The $20 screenings will include cholesterol, LDL, HDL, glucose and SGOT checks. St. Joseph’s Mercy will also conduct free peripheral vascular disease (PVD) screenings on Wednesday, February 24 and Friday, February 26 in Suite B of the 903 DeSoto Boulevard Hot Springs Village St. Joseph’s Mercy Clinic. Individuals who might benefit from a PVD screening include those who are age 50 and over who have experienced leg pain, numbness, or have a family history of cardiovascular disease.

Pre-registration is required for all of the screening sessions and can be arranged by calling (501) 622-1848. For more information about the educational seminars, please call (501) 622-1060.
